Hesburgh Lecture Series


What: Lecture and panel discussing Pope Francis’ Vision for the Church When: Tuesday, April 25th at 6:00 PM Where: Allen County Main Library, Meeting Room A

On Tuesday, April 25th, the Notre Dame Club of Fort Wayne and the St. Thomas More Society of Fort Wayne, in conjunction with the Alumni Association of the University of Notre Dame, will host a brief lecture followed by a panel discussion on the topic of Pope Francis’ Vision for the Church. The event will include a scholar from the University of Notre Dame and two local panelists from Fort Wayne. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with panel members during a Q&A session.

Panelists include:

J. Matthew Ashley – Matthew Ashley is an associate professor of Systematic Theology and the chair of the Department of Theology at Notre Dame. He has a B.S. in philosophy and physics from St. Louis University, a master’s of theological studies degree from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, and a Ph.D. in theology from the University of Chicago. Having authored or edited six books and numerous articles, Ashley’s research focuses on theology and science and on the history of Christian spirituality. His most recent book is Take Lord and Receive, All My Memory: Toward an Anamnestic Mysticism.

Adam DeVille – Adam DeVille is the Chair of the Philosophy and Theology Department at the University of St. Francis. He has his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Ottawa, his M.A. in Theology from Saint Paul University and his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Ottawa and Saint Paul University. His research focuses on Eastern Christianity, Orthodox and Catholic ecclesiology, the Papacy and sexual differentiation and Priestly celibacy. His most recent book is titled Orthodoxy and the Roman Papacy: Ut Unum Sint and the Prospects of East-West Unity, and he recently edited three books on various theological topics.

Fr. Mark Gurtner – Fr. Mark Gurtner is the Pastor at Our Lady of Good Hope in Fort Wayne, IN and is the judicial vicar of the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese. Fr. Gurtner studied at St. John’s Seminary in Boston and was ordained in 1996. He has a Pontifical Degree in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America teaches a course in Canon Law at the University of Notre Dame. He will begin his doctoral studies this Fall in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
